VCS Radio Symphony studies the San Francisco Symphony

There'a nothing quite like attending a symphony concert; and when it's at the famous Davies symphony Hall in San Francisco, it's an unforgettable experience.

VCS Radio Symphony was in San Francisco  Last Thursday night at the amazing Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco to attend the performance of the world renown San Francisco Symphony. There we were -- listening to greatness as their concert opened with a world premier of the newly composed, Dream of the Red Chamber Orchestra by composer, Bright Sheng. This was followed by the world renown pianist, Yuja Wang performing Shostakovitch's Piano Concerto, #1  no less than 3 standing ovations!! After a rest in the upper tier lounge overlooking the grand San Francisco City Hall we returned to our seats to hear what we really came for --- Stravinsky!! The challenging work was called Firebird from his famous ballet of the same name set for orchestral performance by the composer in 1919. The San Francisco Symphony had won a Grammy for their performance of this work and they didn't disappoint, from whimsical tones to solemn  beauty and ultimately to it's rousing conclusion; the orchestra captivated its audience to the end!!

What was of particular interest of our students was that our own VCS Radio Symphony will be performing the same work - Stravinsky's Firebird Suite 1919 in concert along with Beethoven's Egmont Overture Tuesday, November 8th at 7:30pm at the Vacaville Performing Arts Theatre. Will it be as pristine as the world famous SFS? Well... it will not, being that our orchestra consists of students aged 9 to 17. But will it be as impressive as SFS? Even more impressive as nobody would ever imagine that a young orchestra would ever be able to pull of a performance of such magnitude! See the impossible happen and share the joy of the greatest music in human history!  [Pictured - some of the VCS Radio Symphony students and director on a balcony at Davies Hall with the San Francisco City hall in the background. -- Left to right - Callie Moore, Morganne Murphy, Alex Foley, William Jones, Jack Gardner, Ashley Jones, Robert Zeng, Mr. Martin with his coffee]
