VCS Radio Jazz

Overview
VCS Radio Jazz is a unit of the VCS Radio Symphony. It's a smaller ensemble for works that require fewer musicians.

VCS Radio Jazz is a big band, but not in the conventional sense. On stage with Radio Jazz you’ll find saxophones, a trombone, trumpet, clarinet, drums, bass and piano; but also an oboe, a little girl’s music box, a Theremin, a 1930’s style radio, a Tesla Coil, a broken phonograph, an electric drill and some of the most interesting sounds dreamed up from the fertile minds of young musicians. It’s not random --- everything has its place and the music is thought provoking, entertaining and immensely beautiful.

VCS Radio Jazz is in its 12th year and in that time they have collaborated and performed with such noted artists as Junior Mance, Beth Custer, Don Byron, Peter Appelbaum, Charlie Hunter, Ron Miles, Jeff Cressman, George Colligan, Dafnis Prieto, and Yosvany Terry, Ben Goldberg, and Myra Melford.

This imaginative band has been featured at the Other Minds Festival of New Music in San Francisco; scored an original award-winning radio drama series for broadcast, performed at the legendary Yoshi's Jazz Club, opened at the famous Fillmore Jazz Festival in San Francisco, where they premiered their original jazz score for Art Clokey's (Gumby creator) early claymation films.

Their latest project is their 7th album, Live at Space Lounge, recorded at Capitol Records Studios and their new project, New Beat Coffee House Set, premiering February 23rd 2016!
